Welcome to the ProBleu Ocean Explorer Tool

This easy-to-use web tool helps you investigate different properties of our oceans and seas. This tool focuses on European Regional Seas, encompassing the Mediterranean Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, and the North Sea with the adjacent off-shelf region. This area has rich ecosystems and provides valuable resources like fish and offshore energy but is vulnerable to climate change and human activities.

Select Region, Variable, and Level

Selected region: North West Europe, variable: Chlorophyll, level: Top

Here's how to use this tool:

  • Pick one region:
    • North West Europe1
    • Mediterranean Sea2,3
    • Baltic Sea4,5
    • Black Sea6,7
  • Pick one ocean property:
    • Chlorophyll (indicates phytoplankton content in water)
    • Acidity (shows water acidity – pH lowering threatens marine life)
    • Temperature (how warm or cold the water is)
    • Salinity (how salty the water is)
    • Oxygen (amount of oxygen dissolved in water)
  • Choose which part of the ocean to focus on:
    • Top (near the ocean surface)
    • Bottom (near the ocean bed)
  • Download the data: Click on a point to download two files – monthly and yearly average values for your chosen parameter.
  • Experiment: Analyse your data using spreadsheets (Excel, LibreOffice), Python, or R. Compare different properties and depths. For example:
    • How does surface chlorophyll compare to deep water?
    • How does surface temperature differ between locations?
    • Does oxygen in water change with seasons?

Your observations can lead to interesting discoveries about our oceans! By understanding these properties, we can better protect our marine environments.

Need data from a specific location?

We can add new data points to our Tool! Just send us the geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) of your area of interest, and we'll make the data available for you.
